Some Thoughts
Ninevah was the capital city of the Assyrian empire. Tarshish's location is archeologically uncertain. / Jonah can relate to PS 139:7-12. / Ninevah will invade and destroy Israel in less than a century (2KI 17:5-6, 2KI 18:28-30) and surely there were hints of this by Jonah's time already, so there was a basis for his attitude. But we are called to obey, not to win, nor even to survive. Compare 1SA 15:22, 2CH 24:20-22, LK 7:20, 9:24, JN 14:23-24, MT 28:19-20, and ACT 5:29, 7:54-58.
